Zasadniczym celem niniejszej pracy jest pokazanie istotnej roli projektów transgranicznych w podnoszeniu konkurencyjności w takich dziedzinach, jak innowacyjność, poprawa infrastruktury komunikacyjnej itp. Realizując zasadniczy cel pracy, autor kolejno omawia następujące zagadnienia: l)znaczenie programu INTERREG III, 2) znaczenie współpracy transgranicznej w nowej perspektywie finansowej 2007-2013. Interregional cooperation is one of the most important activities in international cooperation supported by the European Union. The significance of this cooperation is even stronger in the next programming periods. Territorial cooperation carried out in the past showed huge potential of institutions interested in INTERREG projects measured by the number of submitted applications and approved projects. Institutions such as regional administration and public equivalent bodies were interested in particular in projects from the area of research and innovation, information society, environment and protection of environment, alternative energy sources as well as historic and cultural heritage. The long list of topics of INTERREG projects shows the wide spectrum of programme impact. The importance of territorial cooperation is the stronger regional stakeholders are involved in projects. The crucial point of the INTERREG is international cooperation and added value created by the cooperation of similar profile institutions from different countries aimed at solving common problems. Currently new programmes are prepared. They are the continuation of interregional, territorial and cross-border cooperation and are follow up of positive experience resulting from past projects. New projects will take advantage of potential of already activated interregional cooperation. The aim of this article is the description of important role of INTERREG projects in increasing competitiveness (in such areas like innovations, improvement of mobility in regions, protection of environment as well as the presentation of experiences from cooperation among European regions in the past and plans in the new programming period 2007.
