Abstrakty

W artykule zostały zaprezentowane współczesne trendy w zakresie działalności banków zagranicznych w różnych państwach na świecie. W tym obszarze przedstawiono dotychczasowe wyniki badań, które prezentują różne przyczyny i konsekwencje wejścia zagranicznych banków na krajowe rynki. Następnie analizowane są zależności między kryzysem finansowym a udziałem zagranicznych podmiotów w sektorze bankowym. W tym celu w badaniu wykorzystana została baza danych, która zawiera udziały zagranicznych banków w 135 państwach za okres od 1990-2002. Wyniki tych badań ilustrują spadek udział banków zagranicznych w systemie finansowym, który może być spowodowany kryzysem finansowym. (abstrakt oryginalny)

This paper describes the recent trends in foreign bank ownership across countries, it summarizes the existing evidence on the causes and implications of foreign bank presence, and it investigates the link between financial crises and foreign bank shares in assets. The author bases his findings on data regarding the share of banking sector assets held by foreign banks in 135 countries in the period 1990-2002. The results show that countries that experienced a financial crisis may observe a decrease in the levels of foreign bank participation as opposed to those that did not. (original abstract)
