The rise and future advances of performance measurement and management

Abstrakty
Over the past two decades, performance measurement and management has emerged as one of the most popular approaches to understanding organizational effectiveness. Performance measurement system theory is a promising theory of organization design to date, but often criticized for its inability to produce substantive action-guiding norms. Historical review of the rise of the scholarly domain I present, suggests that we are at the crossroads in performance measurement and management research. Important opportunities remain, however, for further work in organizational effectiveness measurement theory development. After reassessing the methodological heterogeneity and complexity of the most widely used performance measurement systems, I demonstrate that substantive measures for guiding and constraining organization conduct cannot be produced without relying on the premises of the complex, dialectical framework. I also highlight the integration with other perspectives such as stakeholder theory, ambidextrous organization theory, as well as evidence-based management theory. (original abstract)
