Zakres czasowy analizy obejmuje zasadniczo lata 1995-2006. Został on wyznaczony głównie przez dostępność danych - w momencie realizacji informacje na temat 2007 roku nie były upublicznione. Z kolei zakres przestrzenny analizy obejmuje Polskę oraz - dla większości wskaźników - pozostałe kraje członkowskie Unii Europejskiej, a dla wybranych - kraje OECD. Zakres przestrzenny i położenie w nim nacisku na kraje Unii Europejskiej jest umotywowany przede wszystkim zbliżonymi warunkami rozwojowymi umożliwiającymi dokonanie analizy porównawczej i określenie perspektyw rozwoju firm i całego sektora high-tech w Polsce. The aim of the article is to define status and prospects for development of high-tech companies and the sector in Poland. The analysis time frame encompassed in principle the period of 1995-2006. The area covered by the analysis includes Poland and for most indicators also the other member states of the European Union. For chosen indicators it also includes OECD countries. The critical analysis conducted in the article proved that many indicators in the area of high-tech in Poland are listed at the end of rankings prepared for the European Union countries (EU-27). The issue troubling this sector is not as much a low number of high-tech companies as the fact that usually these are small firms whose market strength is insignificant. But also potential necessary for further development was observed. Strengths of the Polish high-tech sector are above all the number of companies and high annual average growth rate of export, employment and number of high-tech patents. Further development of the analysed sector will depend on taking advantage of defined potential and decisions of both economic policy and high-tech companies. (original abstract)
