Corporate governance in Japan has been differently cultivated by different stages than in the West economies. Some alternative ways were discussed at the pre-matured period of Japanese capitalism. However, then, the historical trends were interrupted by the state centralization policies for War during the 1930's to 1945. The article presents the introduction to corporate governance in Japan, the evolution of economic system with pointing out institutional aspects of the process. It also shows corporate governance in today's Japan, as well as institutional reforms undertaken after burst of the speculative bubble in the 1990s. (A.T.)
