All researchers should endeavor to conduct rigorous studies, regardless whether they use qualitative or quantitative techniques. However, qualitative researchers face a challenge because standards for assessing the quality of qualitative research are still much less clearly defined than standards for quantitative work. Researchers using qualitative methods do not have sufficient guidelines to help them design and implement rigorous studies. To address some of these concerns, in this article we discuss the problem of validity and reliability in qualitative research, present main factors which can influence the quality of data and, lastly, offer a number of strategies for increasing the reliability and validity of qualitative research designs.
