Abstrakty

Korporacje transnarodowe (KTN) odgrywają dużą rolę w wymiarze gospodarczym procesu globalizacji. Od końcowych dekad ubiegłego stulecia rośnie zainteresowanie naukowców i praktyków gospodarczych intensyfikującą się aktywnością korporacji transnarodowych w sferze badawczo-rozwojowej (B+R). W niniejszym opracowaniu, opierając się na dostępnych analizach badań empirycznych i danych statystycznych, ukazano rosnący wpływ KTN na polu badań i rozwoju przez pryzmat wzrostu znaczenia takiej działalności ujmowanej jako funkcja korporacyjna. Transnational corporations (TNCs) are playing, from the macroeconomic perspective, an increasing role in research and development (R&D) activities worldwide. A specific interplay between the technological progress and the R&D activities of TNC is discernible. However, the internationalisation of corporate R&D activities has not the same pace or intensity in all industries. The greater the pressure on new innovative products (or processes) in a given industry, the greater the propensity of industry TNCs to decentralise and globalise its R&D activities. It is anticipated that this process will be advanced in more and more TNCs regardless of the difficulties in organising and managing the internationally dispersed network of corporate R&D units. The function of R&D will be thereby gaining more and more strategic importance in the value chain of TNCs. The most probable effect of this trend is therefore likely to be an increasing number of centres of excellence in TNCs' corporate networks, i.e. special autonomous units dedicated to conducting R&D programmes aimed at developing the crucial technological capabilities for their corporations.
