The IT solutions commonly perceived as modern, due to their modernity often are far from being mature, and are not always reliable. When used to serve important company functions they can become a source of serious problems, and even result in business failures. A good example of that is the initial stage of Internet banking, when the IT systems involved were developed and run ignoring threats of security, and suffered multiple service disruptions. The banks nowadays depend on IT technology very much, and strong competition encourages them to continuously reach for the latest solutions in this area. This paper makes an attempt to set safety limits for various kinds of IT solutions found in banks, using the example of the new category, commonly named "Cloud Computing". It is obvious the limits should be based on the level of risk involved, however the known and established methods of risk assessment are not entirely suitable for this purpose. The paper discusses the subject of Cloud Computing, its origin and nature, and also reviews the risks likely to result from its use. The characteristics of Cloud Computing services already available are presented, and an attempt is made to evaluate their suitability for the purpose of banking IT. The paper concludes with proposals of Cloud Computing services of the kind capable of restraining the risks involved, while preserving benefits likely to be gained. (original abstract)
