Lithuania, the population of which is 3.5 million people, after receiving independence experienced a very rapid social-economic and political transformation. Significant structural changes took place in the economy and other spheres, especially in foreign trade. Earlier the trade was oriented to Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States, but now a big part of foreign trade falls on EU countries1. From the geographical point of view Lithuania is situated in a favourable place - in the centre of Central Europe. It is the biggest country from the Baltic States, has borders with Latvia, the Republic of Byelarus, Poland and Kaliningrad region (Russia). Lithuania's being a EU member allows it to strengthen its role in Europe and the world, and from the economic point of view the membership would raise the level of trade and welfare. Lithuania closely cooperates with the neighbouring Baltic States, Poland, Germany, Russia, Byelorussia, Italy, France, etc. It is recognised that market economy functions in Lithuania as a result of the last decade reforms. W artykule omówiono rozwój ekonomiczny Litwy w latach 1991-2003. Przeanalizowano podstawowe wskaźniki makroekonomiczne dla tego okresu oraz porównano je ze wskaźnikami innych krajów kandydujących do Unii Europejskiej. Dokonano również oceny spełniania przez Litwę kryteriów z Maastricht oraz możliwości integracji tego kraju z UE.
