The global market is facing intense competition from Chinese industrial exports. The paper highlights some of the key aspects of China's accession to the World Trade Organization. With China’s emergence on the world economy, China’s WTO per se is likely to generate substantial additional benefits for the country and have little additional impact on OECD economies. For the Chinese economy, full integration of the country’s huge labour force into the international division of labour might create significant welfare losses in some Chinese regions. China must give the highest priority to deepening and widening the market by speeding up diffusion of new knowledge to scientists and managers and by providing appropriate re-training programmes for displaced workers. However, a country’s growth rate depends on multiple factors, including its technological capacity, economic openness, meritocracy, the adequacy of its infrastructure, an efficient and incorruptible government. High-quality financial institutions, astute macroeconomic management are of fundamental importance in economic growth. (original abstract)
