For the Polish food-processing industry, the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries has been a time of intensive changes released by the systemic transformation and Poland's accession to the European Union. It was necessary to modernise plants thoroughly in order to make them competitive in both, die domestic and Union markets. What has proved highly useful in this matter was the possibility of co-financing investments from the means of Measure 1 of the SAPARD programme. The absorption of the SAPARD funds has increased the level of adjustment of food-processing plants to the EU sanitary; veterinary and food-safety standards: 758 plants have attained the EU sanitary and veterinary standards, 581 have introduced the HACCP system, 747 have implemented, or are in the process of implementing, the programme of adjustment to the standards in force in the Union, and 731 have completed the adjustment programme and come up to minimum domestic requirements as to production hygiene and livestock well-being. In preparing their applications, the beneficiaries have gained valuable experience. In sum, the SAPARD programme has proved an important tool in modernising the food-processing industry and boosting its competitiveness. (original abstract)
