Abstrakty
Artykuł składa się z dwóch warunkujących się wzajemnie części. Pierwsza prezentuje metodologię mierzenia konkurencyjności gospodarczej kraju na rynku światowym, a zarazem krytyczną ocenę najczęściej dotychczas stosowanych - zwłaszcza w literaturze amerykańskiej - metod pomiaru. Dodatkowym czynnikiem przemawiającym za takim ujęciem jest fakt, iż zagadnienia te są w literaturze polskiej traktowane jak na razie w zasadzie marginesowo. W drugiej części przedstawiamy empiryczną ocenę konkurencyjnej zdolności gospodarki amerykańskiej w latach 1963-1983, wykorzystując niektóre z przedstawionych w części pierwszej narzędzi pomiaru. Za istotne novum uważamy - jak sądzimy - zwrócenie szczególnej uwagi na rolę wewnętrznych czynników, które spowodowały relatywne obniżenie się - a w niektórych dziedzinach gospodarczych nawet utratę - zdolności konkurencyjnej Stanów Zjednoczonych w stosunku do głównych partnerów. Wśród wielu determinant kształtujących ten proces za podstawową uważamy zmniejszenie się w analizowanym okresie efektywności gospodarki amerykańskiej. (fragment tekstu)
The basic objective of the paper consists in the analysis of competitive capacity of American economy in dynamic approach, and the identification of causes determining the level of competitiveness. In section 1 of the paper the authors present the methodology of measuring the competitive capacity of a country at the world market. In the following part, the results of empirical analysis are presented concerning the competitive capacity of the USA in the period 1963-1983. Among the most important factors which contributed to decreased competitive capacity of American economy are the following: the lowest growth rate of work effectiveness (especially in industry) - compared with the main world competitors, declining profit rate in the export-oriented branches, the highest level of overhead labour costs in industry, the lowest dynamics of outlays for research and development, weak innovativeness in the economy, the overvalued dollar in relation to other main currencies, and the profound deficit of the balance of payments. The empirical research has proved, that during the analysed period, the competitive capacity of American economy in the world has declined. (original abstract)
