The author defines the standard of living as a relation between nominal wages and the relatively stable full current subsistence costs: S=D/K where S = standard of living, D == nominal wages, K = costs of current subsistence. The developed mathematical formula of the standard of living for a given territory takes the following shape: (1/100)Σ(D1/K1)wi, where w — constitutes the weight which in a percentage relation shows the participation of different income groups in the whole of income money. The theoretical index cannot, however, find at present a practical application. The lack of precise data must be blamed for this. The author, therefore, made an adaptation of the theoretical conceptions to the practical possibilities and constructs a practical index to measure the standard of living — the index of real wages: S = (D1+D2/Kw)100 where D1 plus D2 — the index of wages and salaries, and Kw = the index of costs of subsistence. In theabove index the author comprises not only the money wages of physical workers (as has been done heretofore) but the total money income of all hired workers. In this lies its novum. That practical index can be relatively easily computed. To this effect the author availed himself of the data concering American relation in the period iof 1947 to 1958. On the basis of these data the proof has been demonstrated. In the structure of the theoretical index two social aspects of paramount importance have been considered: 1) the income structure of the population, 2) the respective weight of various income groups. The assence of the author's line of thinking is in harmony with the outlook of Prof. S. G. Strumirin, who asserts that: „in order to measure the standard of living we should know not only the volume of income and national product, but also their division among different classes and the structure of mass consumption." The theoretical index can perform this, carrying out, so to speak, the postulate of social justice. (original abstract)
