The aim of the paper is to present the position of mutual insurance companies (TUWs) functioning on the worldwide insurance market. The author enumerates the factors that determine the position of TUWs, including historical, legal, socio-economic and political ones, and then looks at the share of TUWs in the five largest insurance markets (according to gross written premium) in the years 1997-2006, during which the most significant changes occurred in the British and Japanese markets. In Great Britain the share of TUWs in premium income fell more than fourfold. This is attributable to the rapidly progressing process of demutualisation. In continental Europe, mutual insurance companies were transformed into joint stock ones to a much smaller degree. This is clearly visible in France and Germany, where TUWs not only maintained their share of contributions collected, but also strengthened their position. During the period under consideration the United States can be characterised as having the most stable TUW position, though there has been a significant decrease in the share of TUWs in life insurance. The author also presents the ten countries in which the position of mutual insurance companies is the strongest. Seven of them are located in Europe, which confirms the notion that the continent is a bastion of the idea of mutuality. In the summary, the author looks at the faster growth experienced by TUWs than by publicly traded companies in terms of gross written premiums. He notes however that the weaknesses of TUWs, which were the reason mutual insurance companies were transformed into publicly traded companies, cannot be glossed over. Among these weaknesses can be counted a limited ability to raise capital, the contradiction that exists between the strategy for rapid development and the guaranteeing members full yet inexpensive insurance, and mostly ineffective control exercised by TUW members of its operation and management.
