The accelerated development of the productive forces of our time, frequently designated as the third industrial revolution, produces great alterations in the economics and the organisation of social life. The author delineates at first in a synthetic manner the direction of these transformations, indicating especially the role of automation in the processes of labour and of the entire system of management. Concentration is the result of these changes, but it becomes itself, in the long run, a factor stimulating technical progress. The inflation of the dimensions of capitalist enterprises has also its source in a frantic competition. These processes of development comprise not only industry but also other sectors of the national economy, as instance agriculture, the turnover of merchandise and others. In further considerations the author describes the consequences of these alterations in social life. The tendency of an automatic control of the processes of labour and the pressure of a hierarchic systam of management provokes an obsessive feeling of dependence and alienation in the men. In a socialist régime conditions for preserving integration in a macro-social scale exist, nevertheless here also a considerably centralised economic management may produce processes of depersonalisation and feelings of alienation in the ranks of the workers, especially when the process of management is subject to degeneration. The principle of democratic centralism, inseparably connected with the socialist régime, traces directions for surmounting the alienation of the producers. The point is that ways for a maximum exploitation of technical progress for the realisation of direct democracy and selfmanagement should be sought, while an extension of the centralisation of the disposal of national economy ought to be avoided. The author indicates the possibilities created by the new techniques, and especially by electronics, for realising a universal progress for humanity throught the co-operation of all men.
