The withdrawing feudalism left large and small country farms. This fact took place independently of Prussian or Franco-American trends of the development of capitalism in agriculture. A further process of destratification must have obviously been achieved within the framework of the new regime. The peasant farms, obliged to cope with many difficulties, fought for the maintenance of their property. This became possible by means of subordination to capitalistic requirements and subservience to their economic laws. The shortcomings of individual farms which became apparent in the course of this process were supported and complemented by associative enterprises, bearing the character of mutual aid. Their need arose from economic, social and political premises. Economic premises were the most distinctly visible in production and were connected with the necessity of its modernisation with the aim of creating better paying conditions and an increase of profits. Beside associations (Genossenschaften) connecting the farms, societies (Verein) were also formed, of which people of the sam profession or having similar needs and social aims became members. The expanding association and societies also performed, in the course of time, a political role. In this manner a separate representation of the interests of peasants developed. (original abstract)
