The author of the article attempts to determine labour economics as a specialized economics within the system of economic sciences. He polemizes against the attitude of some scientists in this respect because they tend to regard it as a part of the so-called science of labour. Characterizing the developments of labour economics in particular countries the author points to differences in denning its subject and range of study. These differences result from differences of social and economic conditions between the capitalist and the socialist countries. In the author's opinion the task of labour economics cannot be limited to the cognizance of general and particular regularities, as far as the development of the organization of social labour is concerned but it should also elaborate projects aiming at systematic improvement of the organization of social labour, its distribution and cooperation. As the main subject of research concerning modern labour economics the author accepts, besides the traditionally included problems of distribution of labour, first of all conditions and factors of labour efficiency. The place where the latter should be studied is an industrial enterprise with in which all the economic laws and rules are reflected and consciously applied. The difficult problems of employment and disposition of so-called human factor are not limited merely to the macroeconomic sphere. In the microeconomic sphere - in the enterprise - their complexity is still greater. The practical solving of problems which the management of the enterprise faces requires such knowledge of the working conditions in the enterprise that would favour the increase of work efficiency. The chief discipline which specializes in this field is labour economics. (original abstract)
