Celem niniejszego artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie stosunków gospodarczych między Unią Europejską a Mercosurem (Wspólnym Rynkiem Południa) w powiązaniu z procesami, które mają doprowadzić do utworzenia Strefy Wolnego Handlu Obu Ameryk (FTAA). Rozważania służyć mają zweryfikowaniu poglądu o istnieniu zależności między rozmowami na temat zacieśnienia stosunków, które od połowy lat 90. kraje Mercosur prowadziły zarówno z Unią Europejską, jak i krajami obu Ameryk. The aim of this article is to characterise economic relations between the European Union and Mercosur (Common Market of the South) in light of processes that are to lead to the creation of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The authors’ deliberations seek to verify the view that there exists a link between the talks on closer ties that Mercosur countries have been conducting since the mid-1990s both with the European Union and with the countries of the Americas. The article comprises five parts. Part one looks at the Common Market of the South, from its genesis until the practical realisation of its aims. Part two describes Mercosur’s external relations in practical terms. In part three, the authors present Mercosur’s relations with the countries of both Americas, including negotiations on the establishment of the FTAA. Part four is devoted to Mercosur’s relations with the European Union, including negotiations in regard to an International Association Agreement. In the final part of the article, the authors attempt to summarise the discussed the issues and to answer the question of whether there exists a link between these two negotiation processes conducted by Mercosur.
