Abstrakty

Przeobrażenia strukturalne w gospodarkach krajów europejskich związane z rozwojem masowej produkcji przemysłowej i pojawieniem się nadwyżek produktów doprowadziły do zmiany nastawienia krajów europejskich wobec polityki handlowej i wzrostu liberalizacji handlu. Dysponująca przewaga konkurencyjna Wielka Brytania prowadziła politykę wolnego handlu. Za jej przykładem podążyły inne kraje europejskie, doprowadzając do liberalizacji handlu międzynarodowego, która miała miejsce w latach 60. i 70. XIX wieku. Powrót do protekcjonizmu nastąpił w ostatnim dwudziestoleciu XIX wieku i był związany z pogorszeniem koniunktury gospodarczej. W artykule przedstawiono zmiany, jakie następowały w polityce handlowej krajów europejskich w XIX wieku, zanalizowano ich najważniejsze przyczyny i skutki. (abstrakt oryginalny)

Industrial revolution and development of mass production resulted in production surpluses which could be sold abroad. In consequence we can observe a shift in commercial policy of European countries that appeared in 19^th century. The leader of this shift was Great Britain which started to implement free trade policy in 1840s. Other European countries followed suit signing a number of bilateral treaties liberalizing their tariffs in 1860s an 70s. The result was an "era of economic liberalism" and a significant increase in merchandise exports of European countries as well as general development of international economic relations. The return to protectionism in the later part of the century was caused by the economic recession in Europe. The article presents the evolution of commercial policy in European countries and analyses the causes and effect of the implemented policies. (original abstract)
