This paper surveys the literature on dividend policy. Corporate dividend policy has captured the interest of economists of this century and over the last five decades has been the subject of intensive theoretical modeling and empirical examination. A number of conflicting theoretical models define attempts to explain corporate dividend behavior. Corporate dividend policy theories are currently divided as to their prediction of the dividend payment's effect on share price. Generally, three schools of thought have emerged. One fraction sees dividends as attractive and as positive influence on stock price. A second bloc believes that stock prices are negatively correlated with dividend payout levels. The third group of theories maintains that firm dividend policy is irrelevant in stock price valuation. Theories of corporate dividend policy better separate into a different taxonomy than currently used. In this taxonomy, theories are segregated into theories formulated with full information, theories with information asymmetries and theories using behavioral principles. (original abstract)
