The role of a state in modern economy as a rule gives rise to much controversy as well as sparks off a great diversity of emotions. In Poland there is a popular saying: "the less government interference in national economy, the better". On the other hand, however, lots of businesses and vocations suffering the adverse effects of the unrestricted reign of free enterprise keep clamouring for the state support, even blame the government policies for their present predicament. Generally speaking, the trend to have the role of a state seriously curtailed in favour of letting the market forces enjoy a free reign of national economy is quite understandable in the sense that Poland has only very recently put behind itself several decades of calamitous experience brought about by the state-managed command economy practised under the communist rule. In terms of individual experience it is perfectly understandable that people tend to look up to the state for protection and comfort in the face of impending bankruptcy, unemployment and poverty, as might well be brought upon them by the invisible hand of the market.
