Current regulations on cosmetics (Directive 76/768/CEE with the relevant updates 2003/15/CE, 2005/42/CE, 2007/67/CE, 2008/42/CE, 2009/36/CE and further amendments) restrict the use in cosmetic products of chemical substances classified as Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or toxic to the human Reproductive system (CMR). The major quality systems ap-plicable to research and production in the field of cosmetics are briefly recalled. The above legal provisions, however, do not rule out the addition of odorants that are considered to be, e.g., equally hazardous to the nervous, endocrine, and respiratory system. In addition, no information is given about the possible environmental pollution produced by the above-mentioned substances. A number of odorants are surveyed, which are contained in more than 3100 fragrances commercially available at present and deemed to potentially cause adverse effects to man and the environment. The need for better protection of the consumer from health risks by the relevant authorities, firms, and traders is discussed. (original abstract)
