Do wstępnej charakterystyki kapitału przedsiębiorstwa stosowane są różnorakie kryteria jego klasyfikacji, ale najbardziej rozpowszechniony jest podział kapitału na podstwaie kryterium jego własności na kapitał własny i kapitał obcy. Zarówno kapitał własny jak i obcy mają swoje zalety i wady sprawiające, że w określonych warunkach działania lepszym rozwiązaniem jest finansowanie działalności kapitałem własnym, a w innych obcym. The enterprise functioning and development depends on its capital level and structure. The own capital comes from the enterprise itself or from its shareholders, but the outside capital is obtained from the enterprise environment. The choice of financial sources is very difficult and depends on many inner and outer factors. The aim of the paper i s to present the reasons of changing the level of the own capital and to point out the most frequently used forms of the enterprise activity outer financing. The aim has been achieved by using chi-square independence test. It is used while researching non-measurable features (qualities) or in the case of researching of independent quality features with quantity ones. As a result of the researches taken on the group of 318 random enterprises it has been settled that the basic cause of the own capital level changes were surcharges made by hitherto existing partners, but not by increasing number of shareholders. In case of outside capital, however, more than 60% of the enterprises have availed the bank credit. The decision of taking the bank credit has not been determined by the enterprise incomes, its financial results or the amount of its own capital but mostly by the size of the enterprise.
