Definicja kapitału społecznego wg M. Woolcocka i D. Narayana wskazuje na istnienie dwóch podstawowych perspektyw mogących służyć za punkt wyjścia zrozumienia i badania kapitału społecznego: perspektywy jednostki i społeczności. Poniżej zostaną zaprezentowane przemiany kapitału społecznego w wybranych państwach wysoko rozwiniętych w drugiej połowie XX w. z punktu widzenia tej drugiej perspektywy. (fragment tekstu)

The main changes of social capital in selected developed countries are considered in paper of Stanisław Kamiński. Since there is no general agreement on the meaning of social capital, author chooses the Woolcock and Narayan concept that "the basic idea of social capital is that a person's family, friends and associates constitute an important asset". The main areas presented in the paper are: citizens activity, political participation, religious participation, union membership and social trust. According to the Putnam's research on social capital in the United States, most of the indicators have decreased since the Second World War. It is true whether political participation, civic activity or social trust is concerned. Conversely, indicators show that in the same period in Great Britain there was some growth of social capital. Hall suggests, that it was mainly due to social policy which enabled most citizens to gain proper education. Data on social capital in OECD member states show that there was general decrease of social capital regardless of the indicator considered. (original abstract)
