Felix Koschin writes that demography traditionally investigates the reproduction of a population. In recent years, however, it appears that developed populations are no longer capable of reproducing themselves - the mortality exceeds the natality and the populations are slowly aging and dying out. How are such populations able to safeguard the life of their members? This is a question that is often shaken out nowadays, because there is a visible increase in those who will be dependent on the production of others, on the production of those who are, on the contrary, declining in numbers. How, then, might such population be able to survive? Naturally, one of the possibilities is migration. But it has already been proven more than once that only permanently exceptionally high migration would be capable of ensuring the unchanging relationship of the productive and the post-productive. The second possibility is to increase production. However, production is dependent on how much we invest in it, not only of financial capital, but also of human capital. There is no doubt that average human capital has increased in recent centuries, so that there was a rapid increase in labour productivity and also in overall production. But how should human capital be measured? This is a problem that still awaits a solution, nevertheless we can select a replacement solution, an approximate solution. (original abstract)
