Farmer and Consumer Awareness of Hen Welfare in Different Housing Systems as Related to Competitiveness on the Egg Market in the Age of Globalization

Abstrakty
Farmer and egg consumer knowledge of hen welfare in different housing systems and the importance of hen housing system to egg buyers were evaluated using the questionnaire method. It was found that the egg consumer knowledge of hen welfare is low. Some consumers give preference to free-range housing not because of welfare considerations but due to what they believe is better quality of free-range eggs. Egg buyers are mainly guided by freshness, price and size, while paying least attention to the housing system and hen welfare. The results obtained show that the Polish consumer at large needs to be thoroughly educated because new Ell hen welfare regulations will cause a considerable increase in egg production costs, which will have to be compensated by higher egg prices. If consumer awareness does not change, Polish egg production may fall and Polish egg producers may become less competitive on foreign markets. (original abstract)
