The article presents a multi-dimensional statistical model of results achieved by national teams during Summer Olympic Games in Bejing in 2008. A variable called "medal coefficient" was a dependent yariable in the model. It was a weighted average of the number of gold, silver and bronze medals (the weights were 1; 0,5; 0,25, respectively). The explanatory variables in the model were: population, GDP (total and per capita) and symptomatic variables: rate of investment, government expendi-ture (% in GDP), government expenditure on health service, CPI (Corruption Perception Index). Data used in the analysis included all 87 national teams that had gained at least one olympic medal during the Olympic Games in 2008. The model was used to estimate whether the real result of a given team was better (or worse) than the "model" result for this team. It tumed out that the Polish results were not as bad as the Polish sport fans and politicians claimed but at the same time they were not as good as sports activists claimed. They were rather "average". (original abstract)
