Market economy conditions, stronger relations between European agriculture and global agricultural market, technological progress and enlargement of the EU to the CEE countries where political reasons led to concentration, have increased the number of farms owned by legał persons. These farms operate morę like capitalist enterprises than family farms. The aim of this paper is to define the role and importance of farms of legal persons in the EU agriculture in the light of the European Model of Agriculture. Research proves that farms of legal persons utilize almost 30% of the EU arabie land, hire mostly agricultural labour force and their average size amounts to 150 ha, which is 16 times morę than the average size of individual farms. They produce almost 30% of gross margin in the agricultural sector and its labour efficiency is three times higher than in family agriculture. Because of the short time of the CEE countries membership in the EU and the uncertainty if and in which direction the process of convergence between farms of legał persons in "new" and "old" member states goes, it might be difficult to state whether we deal only with the next evolution of the model of European agriculture or with a completely new model or sub model of European agriculture.
