The paper aims at presenting a general overview of the volume, quality and sectoral breakdown of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Poland and its influence on the country's economic performance, as well as clarifying the role of FDI in its economic development in the last eight years. In order to provide answers to these questions, the authors draw upon statistical data and some existing empirical literature concerning FDI. The article is organised as follows: section 2 discusses the definition of FDI; in section 3 the authors present the numbers concerning the FDI inflow to Poland - this section builds heavily on Polish Agency for Foreign Investment (PAIZ) data; the host country's effects on the macro and mezo levels are discussed in sections 4 and 5 respectively; the final section presents conclusions.
