It is customary to say that companies displaying higher levels of productivity innovativeness are more inclined to internationalise their activities. In addition, the cost accompanying the entry on a foreign market can only be borne by the more productive businesses. Results of empirical studies prove that internationalised companies make greater capital expenditures, have access to more advanced production technologies, and the level their pays is higher than in the case of companies oriented solely to the home market. On the basis of such study results, it may be concluded that internationalised entities possess a certain advantage over the non-internationalised ones, and this advantage is visible even before foreign the foreign activity is taken up. This explanation points to the causality well-acknowledged by the literature on the subject: from productivity and innovation to internationalisation. However, it has recently been argued that companies are increasingly fast becoming ready for expansion to the international market. The development of information technologies, resulting in shortening the distance between hitherto distant markets, enhancing communication and facilitating business relations and their management, may substitute for capital deficits, pushing businesses towards faster internationalisation. Apart from the fact that firms faster become mature enough to enter foreign markets, they also view internationalisation as a source of innovation. The aim of the present paper is to review the results of studies on the relations between innovation and internationalisation in its two basic forms - FDI and export. The starting point for our considerations is the analysis of alternative approaches to the process of business internationalisation: the sequential model, and the accelerated internationalisation model. The characteristic features both models, with particular focus on the issue of innovation and the stage of technological progress of the business going international were presented in the first section of the paper. The next two sections are devoted to the analysis of export and FDI as sources of technical knowledge. The conducted analysis leads to the conclusion that the relationship between internationalisation and innovativeness is in fact bidirectional. Not only do high levels of innovativeness favour internationalisation, but also internationalisation promotes the increase of innovativeness. (original abstract)
Podstawowe cechy obu ujęć, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zagadnienia innowacyjności i kwestii zaawansowania technologicznego przedsiębiorstwa umiędzynarodawiającego swoją działalność, zaprezentowano w pierwszym punkcie opracowania.
