In the context of the subprime crisis alternative concepts of monetary and banking systems are considered. Special attention is paid to the so-called free banking. In the last few decades there was a significant revival of this idea. The aim of the paper is to introduce the concept of free banking and its potential instability. Such an analysis might enrich the current discussion about banking system reforms. The first point presents a definition and the main features of free banking. The second describes chosen historical episodes of the free banking. The third point characterizes controversies over stability -or its lack thereof - of free banking systems. The last point contains conclusions. (original abstract)
