(fragment tekstu)

The paper reveals the possible influence of the financial turmoil as well as the crash of the American economy on the international role of the American dollar. The main targets of the paper are: to define international money and its functions; to analyze whether the American dollar is able to fulfill these functions; as well as to analyze to what extent the global financial crisis is going to make harder or easier the fulfillment of these functions in the future. As a result of the conducted research, some final remarks have been formulated. According to them, the most likely scenario is that the international role of the dollar will not be endangered. However, defending the existing status quo will be possible only under the circumstances of demand for American securities strong enough to dampen the dollar's depreciation pressure. The primary source of that pressure nowadays appears to be mounting U.S. external imbalance. Nowadays, only emerging Asian countries, with a special consideration of China, can be regarded as capable to create such demand. (original abstract)
