The purpose of the article is to conduct a detailed literature research and an overview of the alternative methods for creating portfolios, which, in comparison to the classical approach, apply advanced statistical methods. The described methods are mostly results of research conducted within the space of the last decade, whereas, in numerous cases, the empirical research indicates rightness of their application in practice. The article focuses mainly on the VaR and CVaR risk measures and robust optimization. Additionally, other statistical methods used to determine effective portfolios are presented, such as: robust statistics methods, methods based on implied volatility, shrinking methods, and methods based on MGARH models.
