Numerous management systems can improve the quality of performed actions. One of them is the European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). EMAS is a management tool for companies and other organisations to evaluate, report and improve their environmental performance. The scheme has been available for participation by companies since 1995 and was originally restricted to companies in industrial sectors. Since 2001 EMAS has been open to all economic sectors including public and private services. Since 2009 new requirements are more friendly to organizations. Thirty organisations have been registered in Eco-management and Audit Scheme in Poland so far. As is known, the requirements of EMAS are greater than the requirements of ISO 14001. Thus, organizations that implement EMAS should achieve much higher benefits than organizations having environmental management system according to ISO 14001. (original abstract)

System ekozarządzania i audytu (EMAS) jest mniej popularny niż system zarządzania środowiskowego zgodny z wymaganiami normy ISO 14001. Systematyczne działania ukierunkowane na zarządzanie środowiskowe w organizacji mogą być osiągnięte nie tylko dzięki wdrożeniu międzynarodowej normy ISO 14001, ale przede wszystkim dzięki wdrożeniu systemu ekozarządzania i audytu EMAS zgodnego z unijnym rozporządzeniem. EMAS jest mniej popularny od normy ISO 14001, ale wynika to z faktu, że zaledwie od 7 lat Polska jest członkiem Unii Europejskiej i od tego czasu może wdrażać i rejestrować się w systemie EMAS. Obecnie 30 polskich organizacji jest zarejestrowanych w systemie EMAS. W artykule przedstawiono doświadczenia organizacji, które wdrożyły system ekozarządzania i audytu EMAS oraz zostały zarejestrowane w tym systemie, oraz dodatkowe wymagania, jakim organizacja musi sprostać, chcąc wdrożyć system ekozarządzania i audytu EMAS. Zwrócono uwagę na osiągnięte przez polskie organizacje korzyści wynikające z wdrożenia system EMAS i wykazano, że organizacje zarejestrowane w systemie EMAS osiągają więcej korzyści niż organizacje posiadające certyfikat ISO 14001.
