Abstrakty

Universities are a complex issue for social and architectural analysis. Presenting the narrative of their relationship with the surrounding urban life and placing it within a larger interpretation of societal constraints - be it historical, social, cultural or political paths of development - remains a necessary theoretical consideration. In other words, architecture remains a social activity with many different aspects which can only be understood by looking not only at its aesthetic and functional appearance. Integrating universities into urban space, either as a campus as in Cracow or in a fragmented manner as in Weimar, shows how the architectural creation of space presents certain values, ideas, and norms that grow out of on the one hand dynamic interaction between the university and the city and on the other the community life at the university itself.
