Problems Facing the Labour Market in the Light of Lisbon Strategy Targets - a Comparison of Poland with other EU Countries

The paper presents the guidelines and targets formulated in the Lisbon Strategy concerning employment in the EU. It focuses on directives concerning EU employment rates (total, women's and older workers' employment rates). A good deal of attention is also paid to working conditions and industrial safety. The conducted analysis indicates that Poland's situation, as compared with EU countries, is not good. Employment rates are relatively low for the total population, women, men and older workers (55-64 years old). The gap between the projections for 2010 - a 50% rate of older workers rates and the Polish respective figure - amounts to 24 percentage points, which is the highest in the EU. On the basis of the analysis it may be stated that working conditions in Poland do not differ considerably from those in the countries admitted to the EU in 2004. On the other hand, significant differences can be seen between EU-15 and EU-10 countries. The gaps mainly refer to working hours, industrial safety and older workers' employment rates.
