This article proposes an automated procedure for generation of research hypotheses that relate social capital and level of economic development. We aim to use those hypotheses to check if it is possible to explain income differences across European regions in terms of social capital variation. According to a definition adopted in this study, social capital comprises norms of trust and reciprocity, shared values and social relationships that govern interactions among people and facilitate joint and other collaborative actions.
