Economic history of the world shows, that poor and rich countries alike have been getting into debt and falling into financial crises. And every time the situation seemed to be unique, requiring emergency measures until the economy has entered a growth path again, and a debt ceased to threaten their development. What impact the current financial crisis, which caused in the world economy debt increase to the level unknown before, by measuring the relation to the GDP of individual countries, will have on future economic growth? Searching an answer to this question, the author discusses the impact of the debt - GDP ratio in developed economies and emerging markets, comparing them with historical data, and showing the debt accumulation mechanism and sources. Historia gospodarcza świata pokazuje, że zarówno kraje biedne, jak i bogate zadłużały się i przechodziły kryzysy. I za każdym razem sytuacja wydawała się wyjątkowa, wymagająca nadzwyczajnych działań, dopóki gospodarki nie weszły ponownie na ścieżkę wzrostu, a długi przestawały być zagrożeniem dla ich rozwoju. Jaki wpływ obecny kryzys finansowy, który spowodował wzrost zadłużenia w gospodarce światowej do poziomu wcześniej niespotykanego mierząc relacją do PKB poszczególnych krajów, będzie miał na przyszły wzrost gospodarczy? Szukając odpowiedzi na to pytanie autor omawia wpływ relacji PKB do poziomu zadłużenia w gospodarkach rozwiniętych i emerging markets, porównując je z danymi historycznymi, pokazując przy tym mechanizm i źródła narastania długu.
