This article is about the policy of the European Union and the Republic of Poland on small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). Small and medium-sized enterprises are very important in the economy of the European Union and the candidate countries (e.g. Poland). About 66% of the whole amount of workers work in such companies which produce about 65% of global value of production in the EU. Only 1% of all enterprises in the EU are not small or medium-sized enterprises. The importance of role of the SME sector in the economy of the EU is underlined in the Treaty of the EU from Maastricht and in the other sources of the European Law. Main points of the policy of the European Union and the Republic of Poland on small and medium- sized enterprises are realized by making use of financial or legal instruments and by financial advising. The policy of the Republic of Poland on the SME sector is very similar to the policy of the EU. The main bill of this policy is "An Act of Economy Activity" which defines what a small or a medium-enterprise is. The authors of the article define three main purposes which should be achieved by the policy on the SME sector in Poland: to strengthen its concurrency on the market, raising its export and investment value. These three purposes can be achieved by improvement in the public finance system and tax system- to be more clear and understable, by reduction of bureaucracy, by enlargement of advising system and of a loan market, by creating instruments which can help to strengthen the capital venture market. The role of the government and the municipal authorities in these processes is also underlined. At the end of the article there is a summary in which the authors state that Poland tries harmonizing its policy on the SME sector with standards of the European Union and -as a result- these enterprises can be stronger in the future.
