Głównym celem artykułu jest określenie stopnia zaspokojenia potrzeb kulturalnych ludzi starszych poprzez zidentyfikowanie roli i miejsca potrzeb kulturalnych w jakości ich życia, opis preferencji seniorów w zakresie korzystania z dóbr kultury oraz ich uczestnictwa w kulturze. (fragment tekstu)

The purpose of this article is to establish whether cultural needs of still active elderly citizens of city of Wroclaw are being fulfilled and in what degree they meet expectations of our seniors, and also to identify place and role of cultural events as an indicator of the quality of life of elderly people. In this article cultural life of seniors is taken into consideration in two categories. The first category forms so-called common events, in other words, all cultural events that are available without leaving the house. The second category is determined by all the cultural events that require action i.e. cash flow and going out (exclusive events). The results of the research, which is more detailed described in the article, confirmed the authors' hypothesis that the lack of sufficient amount of money that average elderly person would like to spend on cultural events decreases the possibilities of our seniors to participate in many preferred fields of cultural life. The majority of people taking part in the research takes advantage of access to common events, however, they make a remark that their preferences are closer to the exclusive events. Furthermore, results of the research indicate that many cultural events proposed by different cultural institutions do not fully meet expectations of our seniors. One of the most significant conclusions of this research is that the major part of elderly people consider common events as easy accessible and therefore as a substitute of exclusive events (theater, opera, and ballet on television, cultural programmes, cultural newspapers and magazines).
