Identification of a decision-making process as the first stage to start a family is important for a profound knowledge of the processes of starting and maintaining a family and also for other demographic phenomena, including in particular changes in fertility. It is particularly significant to understand the rules which define a proper selection of men and women on the marriage market. The presented model of the process of making a decision to contract marriage where this decision is preceded by informal relationship is of theoretical character. This model is connected with transition from marriage market to informal relationship and from the informal relationship into a formal married state. The author presents stages of the process of making decisions to contract marriage and determines optimal decisions for each of them. (original abstract)
