Abstrakty

Proces rozwoju starej zachodniej cywilizacji Europy z punktu widzenia jej potencjału demograficznego wskazuje, że z tego punktu widzenia traci ona na znaczeniu. W ten kierunek zmian niemal identycznie wpisuje się Polska, której liczba ludności wzrosła z 35 574 tys. w 1980 r. do 38 136 tys. w 2008 r., tj. o 7,2%. Jeszcze w latach 80. średniorocznie przybywało 0,7% mieszkańców, a na początku obecnej dekady tempo to było już ujemne (-0,03%).(fragment tekstu)

Scientific, as well as political, discourse is lately becoming increasingly engaged with the subject of relations between the East and the West, the North and the South, between different parts of the world, and - most often - about the relations nearest to our area of interest, i.e. those dealing with the regions of the European Union including the EU-15 and the new member states (which have to deal with the post-Soviet historical inheritance), etc. The discussion is always set against the background of problems of demographic potential and changes therein, the emerging trends and possible forecasts and, of course, the effects of such changes. A question often posed is a more general one with an ontological background, a question concerning the relations between different civilizations, both in the past and in the future. The most important element of this discourse for us are, evidently, the problems of Western civilization and its relations with the remaining largest civilizations in the world today. The goal of this paper is to identify the basic demographic problems of contemporary Western civilization (i.e. those visible in the last few decades) and formulate hypotheses for the next few decades. The conducted analysis provides a basis for stating that Western civilization in its recent demographic development and that of the near future is characterized mostly by weak points.(original abstract)
