The purpose of the study was to estimate the degree of competition in the Polish banking sector between 1997 and 2008 with the use of three models: Panzar and Rosse (P-R) model, Lerner index and Boon's method. Results of the quantitative analysis show that the level of competition in the Polish banking sector during the analysed period was similar to the that of other euro zone countries and indicated a monopolistic competition (in accordance with the results of the P-R model). In 2008, it was observed the decrease in competition in the Polish banking sector. A strong driver for the competition growth in the banking sector was the process of Poland's accession to the European Union. The P-R model, the Lerner index and the Boone method showed an increase in the competition before the accession to EU. The same channels (increase in mergers and acquisitions and deregulation) which affected changes in the competition of banking sectors in the euro zone countries, affected the Polish banking sector due to the involvement of capital from the euro zone.
