Abstrakty
Electricity spot prices exhibit very high volatility and unanticipated extreme price changes known as spikes (or jumps). A critical issue in estimation of the volatility is that it might be substantially affected by the price spikes. While it is clear that price spikes should be captured by an adequate model the literature does not agree on whether these observations have to be included or excluded in the estimation process. Our goal is to examine the consequences of the treatment of such extreme events in the estimation procedures. We investigate two approaches for the volatility estimation: identifying and correcting the spikes and using robust method for outliers. For our empirical analysis we have chosen data from the Polish Power Exchange. (original abstract)
