The article aimed at examining and depicting the microfinance concept, its history and the sector's recent transformation. The paper is based on the economic literature, legislation acts, articles, videos and source materials disclosed by the microfinance institutions and research agencies. Theoretical issues and the research area have been examined with use of the descriptive and statistical methods. Even though the microfinance institutions has proved the ability to bear tangible results, the uncontrolled activities undertaken by Indian key market players have shaken microfinance solid facades, plunging the domestic sector into crisis. As the microfinance institutions target at the world's largest social stratums and involve floods of international capital, it is necessary to ensure clarity and integrity within the sector. Microfinance viability can be ensured only the welfare and safety of its key stakeholders - the borrowers. (original abstract)

Celem artykułu jest zbadanie i opisanie idei, historii i transformacji sektora mikrofinansów. Artykuł został napisany w oparciu o literaturę ekonomiczną, akty prawa, artykuły, materiały filmowe oraz publikacje instytucji marketingowych i agencji badawczych. W części teoretycznej i badawczej użyte zostały metody opisowa i statystyczna. Instytucje mikrofinansowe udowodniły swoją zdolność do generowania zysków, niemniej jednak niekontrolowane działania największych rynkowych graczy w Indiach wstrząsnęły silną dotychczas branżą i pogrążyły krajowy sektor mikrofinansów w kryzysie. Z racji, że działania instytucji mikrofmansowych nakierowane są na najliczniejsze na świecie warstwy społeczne i angażują znaczne ilości międzynarodowego kapitału, kluczowe staje się zapewnienie integralności i przejrzystości operacji prowadzonych w sektorze. Przyszłość instytucji mikrofinansowych determinowana jest dobrem i bezpieczeństwem najważniejszych beneficjentów sektora - pożyczkobiorców. (abstrakt oryginalny)
