Przemiany rodziny w zakresie jej struktury i funkcji powodują konieczność korzystania przez seniorów z formalnej pomocy oferowanej przez organizacje pozarządowe, wspólnoty religijne lub przez podmioty publiczne. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie wpływu czynników demograficzno-społecznych, a szczególnie przemian struktury ludności według wieku na system opieki instytucjonalnej w Polsce oraz problemów, przed jakimi staje system opieki nad osobami starszym.(fragment tekstu)

One of the most significant consequences of demographic change is the increase in the proportion of older people, and in particular a surge in the population of the oldest adults. The changes in the age structure of the population result in a number of socioeconomic challenges. In terms of elderly care, the double ageing process has led to increased demand on various forms of assistance. The support system is primarily based on informal family support networks. However, with the progressing family atomization and verticalisation of the family network, the potential number of care givers is dwindling while the number of senior citizens requiring assistance with their daily routine is quickly expanding. Due to the changing family structure and functions, the elderly require the support of non-governmental organisations, religious communities or public institutions. Currently, institutional assistance responsibilities are shared by two sectors: the health care sector and the social welfare sector. The first half of the 21st century is likely to see the development of various types of institutional assistance within these sectors. The main determinants of the use of institutional assistance, apart from poor health and loss of independence, are the income and family status of the senior, as well as the size of his or her informal non-family support network. The subject matter of this presentation is the influence of social and demographic factors on the development of institutional assistance in Poland. The objective of this presentation is to discuss the problems faced by the elderly care system and the consequences of the change in the age structure of the population for institutional assistance in Poland.
