In the period of a quick establishment of international distribution chains in Eastern Europe in the nineties of 20Ih century, the strategies of mass market successions prevailed. After this period, when all major groups (French and German in particular) have chosen to occupy market positions, there is currently some rationalization of investment and a process of concentration. For example, the Casino group withdrew its assets from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, preferring to consolidate its operations in Poland. This group, present on the Polish market since the early nineties, developed a broad network of both local and international suppliers. In the sector of fresh food distribution, however, the relationships with local suppliers, especially small businesses, visibly dominate. The relationships between retailers and suppliers which are SMEs, are traditionally understood in terms of competition and dependence. In this paper, we propose a different axis of analysis. We propose to study these linkages through their ability to spread innovations and contributing to local development and economic dynamics through the potential spillovers. Our study is based on the analysis of a group of Carrefour stores, for which we propose to study patterns of supply and the transfer of skills in Poland. The Carrefour Group has established a specific mode of organization, based on local sourcing which is cheaper and respectful to a regional demand. This policy is found in synergy with those of large multinational firms operating in Poland who manufacture products and provide the supply in the region. This is particularly true for the fresh food sector. The purpose of this paper is to identify the dynamics of these innovative transfer of skills from smaller Polish companies. (original abstract)
