The authors analyze the structure of civil society in democratic Poland in the aftermath of the 1989 watershed events. Having defined the concept "civil society" they proceeded to describe its specific nature in Poland and diagnose the challenges and problems. The development of civil society in Poland is inadequate. The rush of social and civil activity prior to and during the change of the political and economic system was soon followed by a sudden decline. The authors, however do not see any cause for alarm as the transformation process in Poland has not run its course. Besides, if one considers the durability index of NGOs in Poland, the situation looks more promising. Another aspect to consider is the number of hurdles to overcome on the road to a dynamic development of civil society in Poland. (original abstract)
