In this paper the author suggests ways of avoiding the trap of dichotomous thinking when looking for theoretical instruments in investigating European energy relations. The most fashionable contemporary perspectives refer to two traditional alternatives: the realist versus liberal paradigm of international relations. This logic is expressed (in the field of energy relations) by the 'Markets and Institutions' or 'Regions and Empires' approach - the latter inviting more and more enthusiasm amongst scholars recently. This paper argues that the alternative: applying one to the exclusion of the other paradigm is not only incorrect but also, to a large extent, misleading. The complexity of energy relations in Europe and beyond may be captured only in composite multi- theoretical frameworks. Instead of the 'off-the-shelf' interpretative model the researcher needs to construct a tailor-made set of available theories to be applied individually in each and every specific problem. This paper also outlines the basic characteristics of the theoretical approaches to be employed in the specific dimensions of energy relations research. (original abstract)
