The author draws our attention to the changing status and function of borders as the ambivalent effect of globalization on the nation state. He concludes that trans-national relations are quickly becoming over-crowded. This leads to the disappearance of national borders and their changing function, as well as to new borders being created - social and ideological. An analysis of the altered meaning of the term "border" shows that the function of the nation state is being lost universally. Although the autonomy of nation states has diminished, they have at the same time gained a significant controlling capacity, internally as well as on their external borders. This is especially evident in the control of migration. The control of one's borders has become the chief task of security policy. It was even "promoted" to the position of the central aspect of the national identity policy. Globalization not only leads to integration process across borders but also to the creation of new borders which mostly meet the new security requirements. This development, paradoxically, does more to strengthen the nation state than weaken it. (original abstract)
